You know that Google is getting all corporate

When out of 5 map providers, including two other giants (Yahoo and MSN), they are the first to send a cease and desist letter to the MGMAPS project that uses their map server, and when they actually have a "Google Enforcement Team" empowered to do it.

I'm not discussing their legitimacy, I'm not even saying it's good or bad, I'm just making a point about the way Google is changing their posture and relationship with the "web community". I know that when it comes to Maps, Google is very strict. The Gaia episodein the recent past is well known, but the difference now is that they stopped being so polite. This is not CTOs playing good guys and explaining stuff personally, this is lawyers hitting small fish.

Acho que houve um mal-entendido. Estes projectos não usam as API do Google directamente . O Google precisa que eles façam isso para controlar o volume de transferência de dados das imagens dos mapas (tiles) que cada projecto consome. Existem limites de transferência que o Google pretende controlar para não haverem abusos do serviço por alguém que se beneficia impondo altos custos ao Google.

Já não me lembro onde ouvi isso. Se não me lembro onde ouvi isso. Se não foi num podcast do Google, acho que foi no Google Developer Day mesmo.

Agora o que os tipos destes projectos poderiam fazer é propor ao Google ter acesso às imagens dos mapas usando as API. Assim o Google mantinha o controlo. Agora não sei se o Google quer facilitar isso. Sempre vai haver pessoal que abusa, usando as API ou não.

O Google quer que utilizem o API de Javascript porque entre muitas coisas tem controle sobre a apresentação dos mapas e sobre todas as funcionalidades que queiram vir a colocar nos mapas no futuro. E fazem eles muito bem.

É tudo uma questão de controlo. Aceder directamente ao map server é teres de borla, sem compromissos ou contra-partidas, a cartografia e as imagens de satélite todas que lhes custam largos milhões de dólares a licenciar.

E isso está tudo muito correcto, o meu ponto é só sobre postura e mudanças no Google. É que há muita gente a viver o sonho de um Google que parece que não é uma empresa feroz a tentar ganhar mercado.

Há uma grande diferença cultural entre as áreas de engenharia e as áreas comerciais e legais do Google.

Without going over the subject of "Evil Google" or not, I think the cease and desist letter is somehow obvious and I suspect that Google might not own the entire rights of those map tiles for other mediums rather than the web. I mean Google buys maps to other sources as far as I know, and it's possible that they too have limits on those...

Of course not using the API isn't that "GOOD" either!
